Who Khumai Danda and Korchon suit

Khumai Danda is a short ridge trek north of Pokhara. From Ghachok you climb through forest to Khumai Danda and on to the Korchon viewpoint (about 3,700 m), where Machapuchare (Fishtail) fills the sky in front of you, with Annapurna South and Mardi Himal close by. Most routes return via Mirsa and the Kharpani hot spring.

It's moderate: short days, but a steep climb and a real gain in height. It suits trekkers with three to five days who want a Mardi Himal-style view with fewer people, and those who like simple lodges and a quiet trail.

Do you need a guide or permit?

Khumai and Korchon lie in the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you need the ACAP permit, which you can get yourself in Pokhara. No TIMS card. See the 2026 rules.

A guide isn't required, but we recommend one. It's a newer, quieter route with few signs, and cloud often fills the forest in the afternoon. Facilities higher up are basic, and a local guide will know which lodges are open.

Best months, and when it's easiest to find a partner

October–December gives the clearest views of Machapuchare. Spring brings rhododendron forest. Winter can bring snow near Korchon but often very clear skies. Avoid the monsoon if you want views.

Very few trekkers walk this ridge, so you're unlikely to meet partners on it. Post your dates before you leave Pokhara.

Doing Khumai and Korchon with a partner

  • Where to meet: Pokhara, then share a taxi to Ghachok.
  • What to share: transport, lodge rooms and a local guide.
  • Where you can split up: at Khumai Danda one of you can stay and enjoy the view while the other climbs on to Korchon. Meet back the same day.
  • End with the hot spring: the return via Mirsa to Kharpani makes a good last day together.

Trek Khumai Danda & Korchon with a local guide

A licensed guide isn't mandatory on Khumai Danda & Korchon, and the rule isn't enforced on most of Nepal's trails, but we still recommend trekking with a local guide.

An experienced guide isn't only there to show you the way. They know the families who run the teahouses and homestays, explain the villages, monasteries, festivals and food you'd otherwise walk straight past, help you talk with local people, watch for altitude sickness and changing weather, and handle rooms, permits and transport so you can simply enjoy the walk. Many trekkers say their guide was the best part of the trip.
